Three Key Areas Shifting the Systems of Social Impact

The Changing Game of Sustainability

Even if you cannot see it, you can feel it. The shift. Things are changing. Traditional thinking, approaches, and systems will not go with us into the future. Understanding why is the easy part. The changing landscape for social impact institutions tells the story.

Funding, employee wellness, and collaboration are topics inextricably tied to the health of any social impact entity. Every organization’s sustainability is linked to its funding. Does the philosophy of your frontline match the focus of your funding? Team performance is directly linked to team member wellbeing. How  integrated is wellness in your institution’s infrastructure? Regardless of the mission, being a good steward of your resources requires you and your team to work smarter not harder. Are you optimizing the impact of your collective efforts? Let’s think this through.

  1. Organizational agendas are set by funding. And while an organization’s leaders may pay lip service to pet causes and projects, money always talks the loudest and has the last word. In April of 2020 an opinion piece from the Chronicle of Philanthropy underscored the importance of foundation leaders and staff being on the same page. Often there is a disconnect between funding sources and the individuals interacting with clients and doing the work. Client-facing team members are the true face and mouth piece of the organization. Does your org’s money match your org’s mouth?

  1. Mental health is no longer a benefit overviewed in a compensation package. In a 2023 article Business Group on Health highlighted that 77% of employers reported an increase in workforce mental health needs. Mental health care must be a part of the institutional infrastructure and a palpable component of the organization's very culture. Employers that value high performing teams make it easy for associates to access care when they need it. How has your organization built wellness into the work week?

  1. A November 2025 article from the Stanford Social Innovation Review heralds a familiar refrain: cross sectional collaboration for the win. Your org’s problems are multi-faceted, multi-layered, and cross sectional. Your staff and your network should be too.

The cool part about this is that it really may not cost you anything but the time to listen and reevaluate where the strengths on your team are found. It is especially important for social impact organizations to create collaborative ecosystems where organizations are able to rely on one another. This is increasingly the case as the funding landscape shifts amid federal and state level newly introduced guidelines. How neighborly are you with other social impact groups in your community?

Levels To This

So we understand why social impact institutions must change in this age, but how they will need to adjust is less clear. In my next post I will briefly discuss a few of the ways that groups are adapting and preparing for the future.

I welcome the opportunity to engage and discuss these issues with you. The topography of improving our society is ever shifting because our society and its needs are ever changing. How prepared is your group for the necessary adaptations? Schedule your consultation with our Clarity and Connection today.
